A Master Conducts Bartók
Béla Bartók’s symphonic poem Kossuth stands in the shadow of his later works and is hardly ever performed. Nevertheless, it in every way merits description as a gem, as a sort of Heldenleben practically verging on Straussian style – with the significant difference that here Bartók, who was a mere twenty-year-old, does not celebrate his own life but that of the Hungarian freedom fighter Lajos Kossuth, the leader in the struggle for liberation from the Habsburg empire during the mid-nineteenth century. It is a brilliantly instrumented, fiery work of his youth, and the opportunity to get to know it is a rewarding experience. Cornelius Meister, the young principal conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, has brought together this stroke of genius and the Concerto for Orchestra from Bartók’s late oeuvre. And, to our surprise, there turns out to be more continuity in Bartók’s overall oeuvre than we had thought. Cornelius Meister debuted at the Hamburg State Opera at the young age of twenty-one and has gone on to perform at the opera houses in Munich, Tokyo, Berlin, San Francisco, and Copenhagen. He numbers among today’s top young conducting marvels.
